Kankrebihar Temple, Surkhet 


Kankrebihar is one of the famous archeological sites Situated in the middle part of the Surkhet valley inside a dense forest. 







Kakrebihar is Situated inside the forest in the middle of the Surkhet Valley. The Kankrebihar consist a big temple with the religious faith of both hindus and Buddhist people.The carved stones and bronze statues in the kankrebihar  reflect the images of Buddha, and many Hindu gods and goddesses including Saraswati and Ganesh etc. It is believed that Kankrebihar  was built by the King of Sinja valley; king Ashok challa.It was destroyed in the Earthquake of 1980 B.S at the present it is under the control of Nepal government and the ancient temple is being built by the government using the techniques of past and using the similar stones as in the past. 


We are ignorant about many aspects of the past because of lack of records or due to the loss of such records. History of a certain place is constructed on the basis of old people’s saying, artifacts, statues, and inscriptions found there. Kankrebihar is a very beautiful place with a clean surrounding. It is situated in the middle of a jungle. Kankrebihar is a Hindu-Buddhist temple near from Birendranagar city. Kankrebihar has a shape like seed of cucumber thus it is called Kankrebihar. Nepali name of  cucumber is Kankro. This temple is belived to be built on 12TH   century.

It is the source of the history,
It provides the platform for the study of historical monuments,

The pace of renovation work is very slow

The old stones and sculptures aren’t kept with strong Security.

History of Kankrebihar
Kankrebihar was built in Shikhar style. Kankrebihar is made up of solid stones with attractive stones with attractive bronze Idols of Hindu gods and goddess along Buddha. This place is also famous for its natural beauty. It is situated over a small Forest.
Kankrebihar is the remains of an old Buddhist Monastery (palace), which jis in the list of national heritage sites in Nepal. According to local villagers, Mahabharat’s Heros-“Pandavas” , came here, built cottage for their living and passed their Banbas Period hiding themselves from others. 
According to the materials excavated from there, it is believed following thing:
Kankrebihar was built during the regime of King Ashok Challa of Sinja Kingdom (presently Jumla Area) approximately in 1268 AD, he ruled between 1255 to 1278 AD.King Ashok was the follower of the Mahayan Buddhism and this Biharis his symbol of devotion to the lord Buddha. Some of he petrography prove that his political influence was recognized upto Bodhgaya (India). Unfortunately, the Bihar is likely to have been collapsed due to strong earthquake in 1833 AD.

Before 2057 BS, it was believed that the temple was much older than the birth time of Lord Buddha.  But after the excavation in 2057 BS, people came to know that the temple is after the birth of  Lord Buddha.
The reconstruction of the temple was started on 2072 Ashar 4. The Contract of this construction was given to the Shiddhababa Construction Private Limited which is located in Shantinagar-34, Kathmandu. The contract was done on 2072 Ashar 4 and started reconstruction from same day. The target to finish the construction is at around the last of 2074 Jestha. Contract number is 30/071/072. Estimated rupees of that contract is Rs 8,98,35,890. The most amazing thing in Kankrebihar is that the main statue of god isn’t found yet.
